  Taleqhani, from Birth to Death
Moussa Haqqani

One of the influential figures in the intellectual developments of revolutionary forces and contemporary Iran’s political developments, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmud Taleqani was born in a religious family and under the attentions of a clergy father. His early youth coincided with the imperialist interventions in our country and the extensive national resistance against foreign meddling in Iranian affairs. Thus a strong will and sacred desire to retaliate the damages of foreigners filled his heart. At the same time, he received religious education and tried to reveal the deeds of Pahlavi regime and the actions of imperialists in Iran and Islamic countries.

Young Taleqani’s residence in Azerbaijan at the peak of Soviet and political parties’ activities to separate the region from Iran proved to him that the integrity of Iran is an essential principle for him. The same principle took him to Kurdistan in late months of his life to enlighten the people of dear Kurdistan to watch the movements of aliens and their domestic agents. His active presence in Moslem countries and his permanent support of the struggles of Palestinian nation proved that the Shiite clerics regarded it as rule to solve the problems of Moslems. He believed that only through unity, the Moslems could remove the alien rule in Islamic world.  His attempts to support Navvab Safavi and the other revolutionaries showed that he was a man of action. His honesty and serenity and also his simple style of life rendered him as a popular and charismatic figure.

Ayatollah Taleqani’s endeavor to form Islamic republic in Iran and performing Friday prayers after the revolution was indicative of his cooperation with the leader of the Islamic revolution to save the causes and goals of the revolution. The nation recognizes its real lovers and his funeral turned out to be one of the great ones of our history. Even now, after so many years, he is remembered for his integrity.

The following pictures are reminiscence for those who had seen him and had worked with him, and for the younger generation who had not seen him, they remind them of the endeavors and struggles of a man who spent his life in God’s path.
