Betrothal of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Farah Diba

Ebrahim Hadidi

If the grounds for Mohammad Reza Shah and Fouzieh's marriage and divorce remained unknown to all, his marriage to Sorayya was completely clear. Their divorce was because she could not bear him a child. The royal family needed an heir, and the court a crown prince. So Sorayya Esfandiari Bakhtiari's tribe gave place to Farah Diba's family to bear a male child.

The hereditary system of monarchy left no place for "women's rights". Eventually, the crown prince was born; Reza Pahlavi, who was not doomed to be a Shah.
