International Conference on the Gaza war (roots, facts, and results)

Gaza strip with 360 square kilometers, is located near to the Mediterranean in the middle east. It shares common frontiers with Egypt in the southern west, and with the occupied Palestine territory in the north and northern east. It has 41 kilometers of longitude and 6 to 12 kilometers of width.

The region is called Gaza after the name of its largest city, the Gaza. All people living in this region are Palestinians.

Following the defeat of the Ottoman troops from the British in the First World War, the British took the control of Gaza Strip and the other Palestinian territories according to the protectorate principle in 25th April 1920. Egypt took the control of the region after the battle of 1948, and in 1949, according to the temporary peace treaty among the Zionist regime, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Subsequent to the 6 days war of 1967, this region went under the control of the Zionist regime and was occupied by the Zionist forces. The population of the region is about 1,500,000, majority of which are Arab refugees who were exiled during the Arab and Zionist war of 1948 from the occupied lands of Palestine. Poverty, unemployment, and low level of life style due to the closure of the frontiers by the Zionists and a damaged economy are what to be seen in this region.

The statistics indicate that a high per cent of the population suffer from malnutrition. According to the results of surveys in 2002, 17.5 percent of the children between 6 to 59 months suffer from chronic malnutrition. 53 percent of pregnant women and 44 percent of the children suffer from anemia.

Eventually, as a result of the resistance of the residents of Gaza during occupation in Aug. 2005, Ariel Sharon announced and executed the evacuation of the region one-sidedly.

In the elections of legislative assembly of 25th Jan. 2006, 77 percent of eligible population voted in a lucid air under the direct control of international societies. The Islamic Resistance Movement of Hamas, despite all problems arising from the occupation and the economic crisis won the elections. The movement had been formed subsequent to the serious situation of the Arab world and Palestine under the dominance of the international forces and the Zionist regime.

Against all threats of stopping financial subsidies in case of supporting Hamas, the Palestinians elected their true representative and Ismail Haniyeh became the prime minister of the autonomous government of Palestine.
